Every great trophy fishery has a legend, and for Beaver Lake, that legend is a single massive striped bass that rewrote the Arkansas record books. The current state record striper is more than just a big fish; it’s the centerpiece of Beaver Lake’s reputation as one of the best inland striped bass fisheries in the country.

The Arkansas State Record Striper

On April 28, 2000, angler Jeff Fletcher of Golden, Missouri, landed a striped bass that would change Arkansas fishing history. Caught in the tailwater of Beaver Lake on the White River below Beaver Dam, this fish checked every box a trophy hunter could dream of:

Weight: 64 pounds, 8 ounces

Length: 51 inches

Girth: 31.5 inches

Method: Rod and reel

More than two decades later, this giant still stands as the official Arkansas state record striped bass with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. It remains one of the largest landlocked striped bass ever documented in the United States, and a benchmark that every serious Arkansas striper angler knows by heart.

A Fish Born of Beaver Lake

Although the fish was caught below Beaver Dam in the tailwater, biologists believe its story started in Beaver Lake itself. The most likely scenario is that this enormous striper lived and fed in the deep, open waters of Beaver Lake before eventually passing through the dam and into the river below. That connection ties the record directly to Beaver Lake’s long-term management as a trophy striped bass fishery.

The catch did more than set a state record. At the time, it also qualified as a 12‑pound line class world record, adding another layer of prestige to both the angler and the fishery.

Beaver Lake’s History of Giant Stripers

The 64‑pound, 8‑ounce record didn’t come out of nowhere. Long before that fish was landed, Beaver Lake had a reputation for producing big stripers. A 57‑pound striped bass from Beaver once held the Arkansas state record, and the lake has consistently produced fish in the 30–40 pound range, with occasional giants that push well beyond that.

This capacity for growth is no accident. Beaver Lake’s deep, cold, clear water and abundant populations of threadfin and gizzard shad create ideal conditions for striped bass to pack on weight. For years, the lake has been managed specifically with trophy potential in mind, with stocking and regulations aimed at growing fewer but larger fish rather than sheer numbers.

Why the Record Still Stands

With a fishery this productive, many anglers wonder why the 64‑pound, 8‑ounce record has stood for so long. The answer comes down to rarity and odds.

A 65‑pound freshwater striped bass is an extremely rare animal. While Beaver Lake routinely produces quality fish in the 8–15 pound range and regularly kicks out 20‑ to 30‑pounders, it takes a unique combination of genetics, age, forage, and good fortune for a striper to reach true record-class size. Those fish do exist in the system, but encountering one, hooking it, and successfully landing it on rod and reel is another challenge entirely.

That’s exactly why the Arkansas state record from Beaver Lake continues to inspire anglers today. It proves what’s possible, and keeps every cast in trophy waters feeling like it could be the one.
